Massage Therapy for children
At Saskatoon RMT, we often receive questions about whether massage therapy is suitable for children. Generally, massage can be beneficial across all age groups, from infants to seniors. Known for its ability to ease muscle tension and promote relaxation, massage therapy is commonly recommended not only for adults but also for children and teens, as it can support overall well-being during their developmental years.
Massage Therapy for children
At Saskatoon RMT, there are certain instances where massage therapy may not be appropriate for children, but these concerns can be discussed and addressed with our team prior to scheduling an appointment.
Today’s children are often under more stress than one might expect. Along with academic and athletic pressures, they also face challenges like peer pressure and the physical strain from prolonged screen time, which can lead to discomfort in areas like the neck, shoulders, and hands.
Studies indicate that massage therapy can help reduce stress and promote hormonal balance, which can result in improved emotional well-being and more restful sleep patterns.
Injuries
Active children, whether playing sports or engaging in physical activities, often suffer from injuries such as sprains or strains. Massage therapy can aid in their recovery, support muscle and joint health, and help reduce the likelihood of future injuries.
Disabilities
Massage therapy has shown benefits for children with various disabilities, whether due to genetic conditions or traumatic events. Specific examples include:
– Autism: Children who may initially be sensitive to touch often experience relaxation with massage therapy, and over time, their tactile sensitivity may decrease. This can result in better management of behavior and more consistent sleep.
– ADD and ADHD: Regular massage therapy can help children with hyperactivity, fostering relaxation and focus. In some cases, this can even support medication adjustments.
– Psychological Issues: Improved sleep quality from massage therapy may make children more receptive to counseling or therapy aimed at alleviating depression or anxiety.
– Cerebral Palsy: Massage has been shown to aid in muscle extension, which can benefit mobility.
– Testing: Studies have found that preschoolers who receive regular massage therapy may perform better on intellectual and motor skills assessments. Additionally, better rest can improve behavior and cognitive function.
– Scoliosis: Early massage intervention may assist in correcting spinal misalignment.
Before beginning massage therapy for children, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure it’s appropriate for their specific needs. We do not recommend massage therapy for children experiencing fever, infections, open sores, or uncontrolled diabetes.
A parent or guardian must be present during the session, and our therapist will explain the massage process in a way that is understandable and comfortable for the child. There is no pressure to proceed with a session if the child is not comfortable.
For younger children, we typically recommend starting with a 30-minute session, with the option to extend the duration as they grow older and their treatment needs evolve.
To make therapy even more accessible, Saskatoon RMT offers in-home services, ensuring that your child can receive treatment in a safe and familiar environment, free from the concerns of public spaces or social distractions.
